Currently more than 8 million tons of plastic waste are dumped in the oceans annually. As the plastic is not biodegradable, it is steadily accumulating in the sea. OrganoClick has since more than 12 years had the vision of replacing non-biodegradable oil-based plastics with biodegradable materials based on cellulose. With the new biocomposite OrganoComp®, we have moved the boundaries for cellulosic materials. By combining OrganoClick's technology for modification of cellulosic fibers, with a completely new production technology for 3D-molding of biofibers, plastics can be replaced with the 100 % renewable and biodegradable biocomposite OrganoComp® in many applications.
OrganoComp® - properties
By combining cellulosic fibers with OrganoClick's binder technology and moulding the material in 3D-molds under high pressure and heat, the biocomposite OrganoComp® is produced. The binder together with cellulosic fibers confers high strength and various degree of stifness to the biocomposite. With the new molding technology, large objects up to 2,5 x 1,5 x 0,6 m can be produced in our production line, with densities varying between 150 kg / m3 up to more than 1.000 kg / m3, making the different materials useful for different applications.
By adding OrganoClick's green chemical technlogies for water repellency, fire resistance or resistance to fungal attacks even more functionalities can be added to OrganoComp®. With a patented lightweight technology, combining the strenght of OrganoComp® with a sandwich construction, super strong and lightweight biocomposites are created. The different OrganoComp®-materials can therefore be used in a number of various advanced applications ranging from replacing particle boards in burial coffins, to replacing polypropylene in risk waste containers used in hospitals. In this way, OrganoClick is expanding the use of biofibers into new areas which have not been explored before.
The biocomposites are produced with a patented production technology for molding of biofibers. As there traditionally has been a lack of efficient fiber molding technologies for large, high quality objects of molded fibers, OrganoClick has developed a completely new and unique technology for fiber-molding of large biocomposites. The development of the technology started in 2009 with the aim of enable production of large, 3D-shaped biocomposite objects with high strength and surface smoothness. In 2015, the first production machine was built and first production started in 2017. With the new production technology, biocomposites can be produced efficiently and cost effective making them an economically viable alterantive to injection moulding of e.g. polypropylene. A schematic illustration of the production can be seen below.
Our biocomposite OrganoComp® can be used in order to replace hard plastics, MDF-boards and particle boards in a variety of applications. The material concept and production technology give the greatest benefit when lightweight, large 3D-shaped structures with more demanding functionalities are important. With our efficient production technology and cost effective raw material, OrganoComp® can even be an economically interesting alternative to injection moulded polypropylene products.
OrganoClick has developed and optimized for a number of various applications together with its customers. Material concepts has so far been developed for the following applications:
- Burial coffins - together with Scandinavias largest producer of burial coffins, FredahlRydéns, a 3D-moulded burial coffin has been developed, replacing particle board, which is on sale by FredahlRydéns on the Swedish market
- Interior design products - together with Swedish interior design company Baux, a material for interior design products has been developed replacing a synthetic plastic material
- Risk waste containers - together with Swedish health care suppliers, a new risk waste container has been developed replacing polypropylene plastics
If you have an interest in any of these applications, or you have another applications in which you would like to test OrganoComp®, please don't hesistate to contact us.
